Armando (b.1929) evolves in the mid-1950s from informal work to black and red monochrome paintings. He co-founds the Nul group in 1960, together with Jan Henderikse, Henk Peeters and Jan Schoonhoven. Around this time he introduces ‘banal’ objects into his work, mounting tap bolts, barbed wire and car tires on a monochrome background. He is also active as poet and publishes (among other places) in the Gard Sivik review, named after the eponymous artist’s café on Antwerp’s Stadswaag.
