Alevtina Kakhidze / Алевтина Кахідзе

2015

Installation, variable dimensions .
Materials: mixed media

Collection: Collection M HKA, Antwerp (Inv. no. S0540).

During the ten days of the 6th Moscow biennial (2015),  which took place at the Exhibition of Achievements of National Economy (VDNKh) Central Pavilion, Alevtina Kakhidze hosted her  TV show All Times News. The artist daily broadcasted three programs. At noon, Kakhidze hosted the Future News — an optimistic vision of the coming times. In the afternoon, there was the Present News, focusing on events happening at that moment in VDNKh. The Past News in the evening was based on a text about Strawberry Andreevna, who lived in Zhdanivka, a small town to the northeast of Donetsk. The story of Strawberry Andreevna was based on the life of the artist’s mother, who stayed in Eastern Ukraine, a territory that had seen some of the heaviest fighting during Ukraine’s 2014 war with Russia. She died in 2019, presumably of a heart attack, when trying to reach Kiev-controlled territory in order to ‘check in’ and receive her pension.

About M HKA / Mission Statement

The M HKA is a museum for contemporary art, film and visual culture in its widest sense. It is an open place of encounter for art, artists and the public. The M HKA aspires to play a leading role in Flanders and to extend its international profile by building upon Antwerp's avant-garde tradition. The M HKA bridges the relationship between artistic questions and wider societal issues, between the international and the regional, artists and public, tradition and innovation, reflection and presentation. Central here is the museum's collection with its ongoing acquisitions, as well as related areas of management and research.
