100 Plaster Surrogates

Allan McCollum

1982

Installation, 218 x 950 x 5 cm.
Materials: oil, plaster

Collection: Collection M HKA, Antwerp (Inv. no. BK007034).

Allan McCollum wants to engage the viewer with the concepts of uniqueness and mass production. 100 Plaster Surrogates was inspired by television images that use a rapid succession of paintings as a background, with a fade-out technique that makes the paintings appear to blend into one another. McCollum asks himself which images count as original ‘surrogates’.
