Wieliczka, May 1994 (The Artist Before His Patron XII/8) depicts a small figurine sculpted from coarse salt. Horsfield found this image in the village referred to in the title, nearby the city of Cracow where he himself lived for a number of years; Wieliczka is home to a salt mine of great historic importance (one of the oldest in the world). Horsfield portrait of the kneeling sculpture inevitably memorializes the archaic, premodern artisanal economy of Silesia.
