Painting

The work is based on a photograph, taken by the artist from the window of her studio in Kyiv. In her painting, she zooms in on the silhouette of a soldier visible from behind. Thus, on the canvas, he becomes an isolated figure. “Painting from the photo that was taken on the big distance and then cropped” is part of Khomenko's ongoing interest in the role of digital images in wartime and similarities between the artistic view and the military optic of a sniper. Created before the Russian attack on Ukraine on February 24, 2022, it was originally conceived for the artist's solo exhibition at the National Art Museum of Ukraine in Kyiv, which would take place in June.
