Jimmie Durham

2004

Assemblage, 332 x 63 cm.
Materials: Rug, semi-precious stones

Collection: Private Collection, Italy.

For this artwork, made in 2004 on the occasion of the exhibition Reasons for Lightness, Jimmie Durham covered a rug with semi-precious stones - a definition which fascinates the artist. Also referred to as gemstones, “semi-precious” stones are rocks or minerals which are cut and polished in order to make jewelry. They are however classified in a category lower than those considered as the real precious stones such as diamond, sapphire and emerald.
