Costis

1970

Drawing, 90 x 55 cm.
Materials: ink, paper

Collection: National Museum of Contemporary Art, Athens - Donated by the Artist (Inv. no. 786/12).

The work We belongs to the first black-and-white series of the period 1969-74. As stated by the artist, via these works he “explores and renders the human form as an expression of the speculations of both the individual and of society, of the esoteric but also of the surrounding exoteric space”.  Via the black outlines and the expressionistic lines of his works, he remains true to his personal ideological stance - he asserts his critical commentary on oppression, social conventions, urban life and all forms of authority.

About M HKA / Mission Statement

The M HKA is a museum for contemporary art, film and visual culture in its widest sense. It is an open place of encounter for art, artists and the public. The M HKA aspires to play a leading role in Flanders and to extend its international profile by building upon Antwerp's avant-garde tradition. The M HKA bridges the relationship between artistic questions and wider societal issues, between the international and the regional, artists and public, tradition and innovation, reflection and presentation. Central here is the museum's collection with its ongoing acquisitions, as well as related areas of management and research.
