Orlan
Event
I.C.C., Antwerp
10 May 1980 - 06 June 1980
Each individual sees and approaches his/her environment and the world from their own point of view and their own physical and bodily experience and perception. Since the early seventies, Orlan applies the homo-mensura theory - man as the measure of all things - as a basis for actions and performances. The Orlan-body is the standard for the measurement of streets and institutions. The Orlan-body is also the material and the tool for questioning existing norms and values. She measures herself with myths such as the mother, the artist, the whore, the Virgin Mary, etc
Her social engagement aims at the awareness of the spectator in relation to the cultural and historical past, communication issues in actual urban environments, social engagement of our actions, etc, and points at the not absolute but relative truth of all things.
