Meio Concreto
29 June 2013 - 29 September 2013
Museu de Arte Contemporânea de Serralves, Porto
Alexandre Estrela (b. Lisbon, 1971) has persistently interrogated the potential of the moving image and the devices through which it is captured and presented. By exploiting unexpected associations between image, sound and structure, Estrela transforms visual experience into a physical encounter beset by a dazzling suspension of meaning.
‘Meio Concreto’ [Half Concrete / Concrete Medium], Estrela’s major exhibition to date, features mainly recent works spanning from 2007 to 2012. Many of them have been adapted to the spaces of the Serralves Museum. The exhibition unfolds along two trajectories, in which works are activated depending on whether the date of the visit is even or odd. In their latent state, the sound and image devices gain a sculptural quality that is crucial to an oeuvre that questions the purported immateriality of the image.
