Research exhibition Avelgem 2021
As from 9/11 (2021) twenty years since the Twin-Tower attack, and five years after the demise of artist Jef Lambrecht his non-profit organization 'Samarkand' presents a series of presentations in his home town Avelgem. Aside from a publication and small show of material of his early years, we take the opportunity to look more closely at some larger works and related material, with the support of the CFAA (Center for Art Archives Flanders) and the Letterenhuis, literary archive in Antwerp. Presentations take place in the community center “Spikkerelle” and the spaces of 'Tanghe Interiors', housed in the former cinema 'Rubens'.
While the installation at 'Spikkerelle' is an exhibition copy of a work presented by Jef Lambrecht at the AK-37 in Antwerp 1995, the multi-use space at 'Interiors Tanghe' is a perfect venue to present ongoing research and will host a matinée every Saturday to elaborate on recent findings. To begin with we have unfurled a number of banners which have not been seen since their creation, stabilized and treated, repaired if need be, and re-packaged in a sustainable manner as part of the ongoing investigation into the oeuvre of the artist.
During the presentation of 'Jonge Jaren' (early years, first part of a biographical series), there were also hands-on investigations in addition to the exhibitions - especially the opening of 'mystery packages' whose content was not clear... and scrolls/drawings... in the the latter case concerned a long roll that was used during the 'Ty van Oktober' exhibition in CCBerchem 1985, the other (unwrapped together with former BIWA co-director Karel Schoetens) contained items that were used during 'Perfo II' in Rotterdam 1984... from another roll it is not yet clear where it comes from.
