Maria Barnas is a poet, author and visual artist based in The Netherlands. She studied at the Rietveld Academy, Amsterdam and was resident at the Rijksakademie, Amsterdam. In 2008 Barnas was awarded the Cees Buddingh’ Prize for her first collection of poetry Twee Zonnen (2003) and her latest collection of poems Jaja de oerknal (2013) was awarded with the Anna Bijns prize in 2014. Both in her written work (including novels, poetry and essays) and in her visual work she works with the idea how description forms and deforms our sense of reality. The fruitful conflict between observation and distortion runs like a current through work, that besides texts, contains drawings, films and installations. Her solo exhibitions include The Bakery, Annet Gelink Gallerie, Amsterdam (2014), public space Bergen (2012), MAMAM, Recife (2011), Buro Leeuwarden (2008), Scheltema, Leiden (2008). She also had several group exhibitions such as: Bonnefantenmuseum, Maastricht (2014), Meinblau, Berlin (2014), ReVerse Poetry Film Festival, Amsterdam, (2014), Castrum Peregrini, Amsterdam (2013).
