Jozef Peeters
1895 - 1960
Born in Antwerpen ().
Jozef Peeters was the very personification of the avant-garde in Antwerp in the 1920s: abstract painter, tireless promoter of the new art, publisher of reviews of international note - Het Overzicht, De Driehoek. His conceptions concerning ‘pure plastic vision’ are less strict than those propounded by De Stijl. Vertical-horizontal compositions and the three primary colors make way for a more flexible composition with circles and triangles, in a broad spectrum of colors. He ceases painting in 1927, and in the 1930s he produces self-designed furniture, as well as wall- and ceiling paintings for his own apartment in Antwerp, making it a showcase of ‘constructivist logic’.
