Georg Baselitz

° 1938

Born in Deutschbaselitz (DE).

Georg Baselitz (a pseudonym of Georg Kern, derived from the place Deutschbaselitz in East-Germany where he was born in 1938) was a crucial factor for the revival of painting.

As a member of the Neo-Expressionists (or the Neue Wilde) Baselitz uses bright colours and expressive brushstrokes. He also paints his works upside-down, which allows him to concentrate on the painterly aspects, such as the expressive qualities of colour, shape and the material.

Baselitz’s post-war East-German roots have a lasting effect on his art. As a Neo-Expressionist he explores the "how" of painting rather than the "why," in method rather than content.
