Frank Stella

° 1936

Born in Malden (Massachusetts) (United States), lives in New York (United States).

Frank Stella (1936, US, lives in New York) studied painting and art history. The paintings from the seven years after his graduation in 1958 have become canonical. They consist of patterns of regular lines marked with unsteady penmanship, at first restricted to white on black square canvases but gradually becoming more colourful and exploring other geometrical forms. From the 1970s Stella made reliefs in dynamic and unpredictable combinations of colours, figures and textures. The later work is heterogeneous and overtly subjective, something Stella opposed in his early career, but also made from more durable materials like metal and carbon fibres.
