Els Dietvorst (°1964) is een sociaal bewogen kunstenares die haar beeldend werk inzet als middel om maatschappelijke betrokkenheid te creëren. Ze studeert af aan het Sint-Lucasinstituut in Antwerpen en behaalt een Master in Fine Art aan het Sint-Lucasinstituut in Brussel. Sinds 2010 woont en werkt ze in Ierland.
Hoe maatschappelijk georiënteerd ook, tegelijkertijd vindt Dietvorst hoogst persoonlijke uitdrukkingsvormen in de zeer uiteenlopende media die ze bespeelt, naast sculpturen en installaties ook het tekenen, schrijven en recent vooral het realiseren van video-installaties. Haar werk richt zich op de vele vormen van sociale communicatie en interpersoonlijke relaties en conflicten, wat zich uit in indrukwekkende sociaal-artistieke projecten, zoals ‘De Terugkeer van de Zwaluwen’ in de Brusselse Anneessenswijk. Dietvorst heeft een specifieke aandacht voor de positie van de buitenstaander en richt haar blik − soms gespreid over meerdere jaren − op personen en gebeurtenissen die anders onopgemerkt zouden voorbijgaan. Ze verzamelt voortdurend dergelijke flarden en fragmenten en brengt ze samen in haar werken. Niet zozeer om op wantoestanden te wijzen, maar veeleer om voor zichzelf inzicht te krijgen, het overzicht te behouden en gebeurtenissen een plaats te geven. Haar samenvattingen van de realiteit vormen een visueel archief dat werkt als een spiegel en reflectiekamer.
Ook met haar sculpturen − vervaardigd uit vergankelijke materialen zoals hout en leem − verwijst ze naar maatschappelijke situaties zoals oorlog, hongersnood en vluchtelingenproblematiek. Zo ontstaat bijvoorbeeld de reeks “Skulls”; schedels die verwijzen naar oorlogsgeweld maar ook de existentiële ervaring van het sterven die we allen delen.
