Alfredo Jaar
° 1956
Lives in New York (US), born in Santiago (CL).
"I became an artist because I do not understand the world". Chilean-born American artist Alfredo Jaar is known internationally for his conscientious work in the field of photography, oscillating between monumentalist imagery on the one hand, and photo-based or ‘meta-photographic’ installations on the other. These works often reflect upon (or self-consciously mirror) the deeply problematic truth claims of the photographic image, whose mechanical reproduction further complicates the issue of testimonial authenticity.
