Het tentoonstellingsproject Middle Gate II – Het verhaal van Dimpna is een samenwerking tussen het M HKA, Museum van Hedendaagse Kunst Antwerpen, en cultuurcentrum de Werft in Geel. Middle Gate 2 is het vervolg op de tentoonstelling Middle Gate van Jan Hoet in Geel in 2013. Het concept van de tentoonstelling is nauw verweven met de legende van de heilige Dimpna, de patrones van de bezetenen en geesteszieken, en de beschermheilige tegen epilepsie en krankzinnigheid. De legende van Dimpna is sterk verbonden met de identiteit van de stad Geel, “de barmhartige stede”.
Middle Gate II – Het verhaal van Dimpna wordt opgebouwd rond de vier symbolen van de heilige Dimpna – de kroon, het boek, de duivel en het zwaard – die elk een thema representeren gelinkt aan de legende van Dimpna. De kroon wordt verbonden met migratie, de duivel representeert waanzin, het boek staat voor spiritualiteit en het zwaard wordt gekoppeld aan (seksueel) geweld. Deze vier symbolen/thema’s worden op vier verschillende locaties getoond, wat resulteert in een groepstentoonstelling die een parcours doorheen de stad Geel vormt: de Stedelijke Academie voor Beeldende Kunst (de kroon/migratie), het Gasthuismuseum (de duivel/waanzin), de Sint-Dimpnakerk (het boek/spiritualiteit) en de Halle (het zwaard/(seksueel) geweld). De tentoongestelde werken gaan telkens in dialoog met de specifieke locatie en de daar reeds aanwezige (kunst)werken en objecten. Middle Gate II benadert met vaak nooit eerder getoonde werken uit de M HKA-collectie vier maatschappelijke thema’s die ook in de legende van de heilige Dimpna urgent waren.
Vier kunstenaressen werken actief mee aan de tentoonstelling. Ze maken elk een campagnebeeld voor het thema waar ze aan meewerken: Tinka Pittoors (de kroon/migratie), Liliane Vertessen (de duivel/waanzin), Nel Aerts (het boek/spiritualiteit) en Els Dietvorst (het zwaard/(seksueel) geweld).
