Poëzie, taal en woordspelingen [Poetry, language, and wordplay]

Ensemble

M HKA is in possession of a large ensemble of Jan Vercruysse's graphic works and prints. Most of Vercruysse's prints are a form of visual poetry. They are mostly minimalistic in design and testify to great precision and eye for detail. The prints are often based on wordplay, a peculiar contrast or an ambiguous statement. In addition, they are full of references to art history and philosophy.

Jan Vercruysse was actually mainly occupied with visual poetry during his youth, before he started his career as a visual artist. Nonetheless, his love for language and poetry continues to be a constant throughout his oeuvre. It is most visible in his graphic works, but traces can also be found in the double-layered wordplay of the titles and inscriptions of his sculptural works.
