For one of his first exhibitions at the Wide White Space, Panamarenko brought in a screeching toucan in a cage. Since then his feathered friends have hardly ever left his side. At 2 Biekorfstraat, the artist surrounded himself with a variety of parrots, a toucan and a dove. The façade of his house even had a gold-coloured bay window in leaded glass that was filled with tropical plants and was intended as an aviary for his birds. On a journey to Peru, Panamarenko went to the Amazon region in search of a hoatzin, whose young have claws on their wings and which are strikingly reminiscent of the archaeopteryx.
