Suzy Spence is an artist, writer, and independent curator living in Brooklyn. Her faux society portraits, genre paintings, and artist’s books explore the relationship between art production and patronage. These works attempt to bridge the gap between painting and conceptual art. Spence has an MFA from The School of Visual Arts, attended The Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, Parsons School of Design, and Smith College. She was Curatorial Assistant at the New Museum under Marcia Tucker’s Directorship, and first exhibited her own work with dealer Colin De Land at his Wooster Street space, American Fine Arts. De Land’s unusual gallery supported conceptual work and maintained a loose business model in order to serve artists who worked at the edge, or outside of the market place. These early experiences continue to inform Spence’s practice. Spence has exhibited at Winkelman Gallery, Pat Hearn Gallery, Matthew Marks, Rare, Holly Solomon Gallery (New York), The Arnolfini, Southampton City Art Gallery (United Kingdom), The Glarner Kunstverein (Switzerland), the Grazer Kunstverein (Austria), Magnus Muller (Berlin). She has received critical attention in the New York Times, The New Yorker, Paper, Frieze, and the Brooklyn Rail. Suzy Spence is currently Curator of Exhibitions at the Richard Meier designed building, One Grand Army Plaza Brooklyn, where she develops an in-house art program that seeks to contribute to the creative culture and energy of New York. She develops three exhibitions annually, hosts educational salons, and collaborates with neighboring Brooklyn Museum for special events.
